Three Days to See

Helen Keller

What would you look at if you had just three days of sight? Helen Keller, blind and deaf from infancy, gives her answer in this remarkable essay.

I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight, silence would teach him the joys of sound.

Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see. Recently I asked a friend, who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, what she had observed. “Nothing in particular,” she replied.

How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the delicate symmetry of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch, or the rough, shaggy bark of a pine. In spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening Nature after the winter’s sleep. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently on a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song.

At time my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes, say for just three days.

On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness and companionship have made my life worth living. I do not know what it is to see into the heart of a friend through that “window of the soul,” the eye. I can only “see” through my fingertips the outline of a face. I can detect laughter, sorrow, and many other obvious emotions. I know my friends from the feel of their faces.

For instance, can you describe accurately the faces of five different friends? As an experiment, I have questioned husbands about the colour of their wives’ eyes, and often they express embarrassed confusion and admit that they do not know. I should like to see the books which have been read to me, and which have revealed to me the deepest channels of human life. In the afternoon I should take a long walk in the woods and intoxicate my eyes on the beauties of the world of Nature. And I should pray for the glory of a colourful sunset. That night, I should not be able to sleep.

On my second day, I should like to see the pageant of man’s progress, and I should go to the museums. I should try to probe into the soul of man through his art. The things I knew through touch I should now see. The evening of my second day I should spend at a theatre or at the movies.

The following morning, I should again greet the dawn, anxious to discover new delights, new revelations of beauty. Today this third day, I shall spend in the workaday world, amid the haunts of men going about the business of life.

At midnight permanent night would close on me again. Only when darkness had again descended upon me should I realize how much I had left unseen.

I am sure that if you faced the fate of blindness you would use your eyes as never before. Everything you saw will become dear to you. Your eyes will touch and embrace every object that came within your range of vision. Then, at least, you would really see, and a new world of beauty would open itself before you.

I who am blind can give one hint to those who see: Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken blind. And the same method can be applied to the other senses. Hear the music of voices, the song of a bird, the mighty strains of an orchestra, as if you would be stricken deaf tomorrow. Touch each object as if tomorrow your tactile sense would fail. Smell the perfume of flowers, taste with relish each morsel, as if tomorrow you could never smell and taste again. Make the most of every sense; glory in all the facets of pleasure and beauty, which the world reveals to you through the several means of contact which nature provides. But of all the senses, I am sure that sight must be the most delightful.

u know lavona when i went to bed and closed every ligts but forot 2

the small one that behind my bed

i stopped and tried 2 get 2 my bed without using any light

then , dropped down

in that time only

i APPRECIATED this a big blessing from our god

but who can appreciate any blessing that we have

????

we will notice that if our god deprive it from us

no thxx no appreciate

even we use them in bad way sometime makes our God anger

but we still don't care

hope this story lead me and u 2 the right way

welcome back

you know Joody I saw a movie about her when I was maybe 11 years

it touched my heart

But I didn't feel the same feeling when I read about her 1st time cuz the second time I stopped & felt about each letter

If had read this story before 8years I might not have the same feeling now

I'm going to tell you why?

when I was 12 years old,my brother & I were playing with a papered palne
he threw it & it picked into my eyes
I was screaming & crying

he was so frightned that I'm going to be blind
he yelled for my mum & they took me to the hospital
There, the Dr. covered my eyes after small & quick surgery
and he instructed my mum don't to open it even for a while
That time, my live changed
I was hardly going to bathroom or doing whatever I wanted to do by myself

For 2 months I was like blind people
At college when they asked me to do a reseach about a person who had great obstacle & overcame it

I wrote a bout Helen keller & about my story
It is impossible to feel whatever she felt , but some of her feelings of blindness I went through

I thought even when I knew my home
where is my room
where is my bed
it was difficult to me to cope with the situation
I missed the faces of the people who I love

when the Dr. opened the cambric
I felt the greatness of life
the importance of colors
I saw the lovely face & the kindest heart my father after 2 months blindness
I can't imagine how hard her life it was,eventhough she was hopeful

Piercing Your Own Ear

Are you considering piercing your own ear? If you are, you are asking for a whole lot of trouble. Today, there are many people considering this, mostly young adults. The problem is that you should never consider piercing yourself. There are many times when this goes wrong for people. Should you consider it, there are plenty of things that you need to take into consideration before you try to. If you are a minor and want to have your ear pierced, talk to your parents. Many will allow it if you talk to them about what you would like and how you would like to do it. Piercing your own ear is dangerous.

What Can Happen?

If you pierce your own ear, you are like to have several things happen to you. First off, you most likely will not have it easy. It will hurt, even if you do not think it will, it will. Most people that tell you that they have pierced their own ears will want to seem tough by saying that it just doesn't hurt. The problem with this is that it likely will.

Beyond hurting, there is much more damage that you can do. Let's assume that you do a simple ear pierce of the bottom ear lobe. This is a simple thing for those that are professionals. But, in your case, you will need to pierce the ear with whatever tool you have. The time from the time that you puncture the skin until several weeks later when the ear is totally healed you will have an open wound on your ear. Infection can easily happen from the moment that you piece the ear until it is fully healed. If the infection develops and you do not get care for it, you will likely have it spread. In some extreme cases, you can lose this part of your ear to infection. Is that worth it?

What Should I Do?

Talk to your parents and have your ear professionally pierced . If you do not want to go to an ear piercing location, talk to your family doctor as they generally can do it for you in the safest, most sanitary means possible.
If you try to do this yourself, you must be sterile. The instrument you use should be sterile. The earring that you use must be sterile. You need to do the procedure in a sterile environment. Use sterilizing products like alcohol to help you stay safe.
If you find any infection happening, you should seek the help of a doctor as soon as possible. You can do irreversible damage if you do not.
If you decide to pierce your own ear, you need to make sure that you take every possible precaution to insure that it is done with the safety that is essential to your own health and well being.
